Research Programs

Multidisciplinary teams from throughout MSU CVM and across the MSU campus-- as well as nationally and internationally-- are working together to investigate and identify solutions to our world's most complex challenges.

At MSU CVM, you’ll find an array of impressive opportunities for discovery that hold promise to improve the lives of both people and animals!

  • We offer master's and PhD programs in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences with options for thesis or non-thesis and a PhD program in Environmental Toxicology. We also offer a dual DVM-PhD degree option.
  • Our VetMed Research Scholars program is one of only 15 National Institutes of Health-funded summer research programs in the country, allowing students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience conducting research and presenting their findings.
  • We are the only college of veterinary medicine to host a United States Agency for International Development Feed the Future Innovation Lab.
  • MSU is also designated as a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Reference Center on Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity.
  • Researchers at MSU CVM and our Aquatic Research and Diagnostic Lab (ARDL) are deeply involved with a variety of studies related to the state's multi-million-dollar catfish industry.
  • Researchers at MSU CVM and with our Gulf Coast Aquatic Health Program are working to protect and maintain the health of aquatic animals like dolphins and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles through veterinary care and innovative research on the Mississippi coast.
  • Our Center for Environmental Health Science is committed to improving the quality of environmental health in our state, nation, and world.
  • Researchers in our Pathobiology and Population Medicine Department are nationally recognized for their work focusing on bovine respiratory disease and antimicrobial stewardship. The department also offers one of only three American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine-approved population medicine residencies in the country.
  • Computational biology is a growing field in research and MSU CVM researchers are using machine learning to study a number of areas related to animals and people, including food-borne pathogens.
  • At the college's Poultry Research and Diagnostic Lab (PRDL), researchers are engaged in applied research in support of the poultry industry. The PRDL also offers one of only eight American College of Poultry Veterinarians-approved residency training programs.
