Clinical Locations & Elective Experiences

The MSU CVM curriculum is unique in that it provides students with two full years of hands-on clinical training and 26 weeks of elective opportunities.

The majority of our students' experiential learning is completed in the college's on-campus teaching hospital and its affiliated sites throughout the state. Additional real-world experience is gained through externships and our Enhanced Clinical Practicum program. Students also have the chance to gain hands-on training through opportunities to study abroad.

These off-campus locations, elective options, and programs include:

  • Animal Emergency & Referral Center: You'll complete a rotation at this busy small animal emergency clinic located in Flowood, MS, just outside the state's capitol.
  • Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Lab and Poultry Research and Diagnostic Lab: Located in Pearl, MS, these labs provide surveillance and diagnostic testing for practicing veterinarians, individual producers, pet owners, and the livestock, aquaculture, and poultry industries throughout the state.
  • Aquatic Research and Diagnostic Lab: Located in Stoneville, MS, this lab provides diagnostic testing and conducts research to address problems within the state's catfish industry.
  • Marine Animal Medicine Experience: Under the guidance of our faculty clinicians on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you'll gain hands-on experience with dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine animals.
  • Advanced Clinical Rotations (ACRs): These rotations allow you additional opportunities on clinical rotations to refine your skills or to gain additional experience in the areas you enjoy.
  • Enhanced Clinical Practicums (ECPs) You'll be able to select from a network of practices across the U.S. to develop clinical skills in real-world settings while enhancing your abilities in client communication and business management.
  • Externships in non-traditional Veterinary Paths: Take advantage of the opportunity to work with companies and organizations related to public health, infectious diseases, laboratory animal medicine, and other areas within the veterinary field through your elective experiences.
  • Studying Abroad: Through the college's work with the USAID and FAO, our One-Health Experience in Uganda, and other such opportunities, you can gain invaluable clinical and cultural experiences learning in other countries.

At MSU CVM, you can customize your curriculum, pursue your passions, gain a wealth of hands-on experience, and be prepared to practice on day one!
